The target audience of this app will obviously be geared towards college students, but can also have a reach to high school students preparing to enter into their higher education. Other users that will use this app will be alumni students that will act as mentors to help assist students in the decision process.
Our main objective with this project was to identify a challenge that students and/or faculty were facing on UVU campus. Various surveys and questionnaires were conducted in order to validate whether or not the problem we found would be worth solving with a mobile app.
We were able to gather a wide variety of data to establish the challenge the university was facing and providing in this project overview will display our processes of how we reached a resolution.
Our main objective with Vocation is to make the process of choosing a major more efficient. Students waste an exponential amount of time and money, aimlessly attending college with little to no direction in their academic journey.
Students want to have real world experience in a particular career before diving into the degree.
A large majority of students don’t know what they want to study going into college.
Students lack insight/information on specific degrees and the career opportunities pertaining to said degree paths.
So what can we do about this?
*The two things that surprised us most was the lack of information given to the student, and also that there were 0% of students who took the time to audit classes in a particular program before declaring a major in that department.
Nearly six in 10 students in pursuit of bachelor’s degrees do take longer than four years to graduate, even further increasing that financial burden, and forestalling the careers they often need to pay for it.
Sophomore year is a big turning stone in the college timeline, because students need to have a major decided by the end of this year.
Summary / Revisions
After looking over all the feedback we received during our user testing, it was time to make some revisions to our app. I decided to create a visual identity to the app by creating a simple logo icon with a sans serif wordmark solution.
Having your app founded strong a strong and easily recognizable brand creates a long-lasting relationship and customer loyalty. We also cleaned up a lot of the interface in order to avoid any confusion in the users experience.
